Razan Ghazzawi

Razan Ghazzawi (they/them) is a scholar-activist and teacher of social movement, queer theory, and grassroots feminism with a focus on Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. They are an award-winning blogger and former prisoner following the revolution in Syria and the SWANA region in 2011. Following their exile in 2014, Ghazzawi pursued their doctoral studies in interdisciplinary gender studies and international relations at the University of Sussex, UK. Their doctoral thesis is an ethnographic exploration of sexuality politics in Syria and Lebanon based on the stories and experiences of Syrian and Palestinian LGBTQ workers, students, and activists based in Lebanon by looking at checkpoints, prisons, and displacement as forms of everyday political violence. They are the 2022/2023 postdoctoral fellow at Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin and the incoming assistant professor in queer studies at Oregon State University. Currently, Ghazzawi is developing their book monograph on queer protest and counter-revolution in the Syrian context.
