Noura Kamal

Dr. Noura Kamal is a social and cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on everyday life under conditions of occupation and political violence, with particular attention to Palestine and the broader Middle East. Her work explores the role of humor, art, and narrative practices as forms of resilience, resistance, critique, and meaning-making in contexts shaped by structural violence and settler colonialism. She received her PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Vienna and holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Birzeit University in Palestine. She was Principal Investigator of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)-funded project Humorous Art and Reconfiguring Palestinian Discourse (2019–2023). Her recent work includes publications on Palestinian humorous art and its role as an agentic practice, as well as co-editing the special section “Humor, Coping, and Resistance” in Focaal: Journal of Global and Historical Anthropology (2026). In addition to her academic work, Dr. Kamal is the founder of Academic Research Training (A.R.T & Beyond), where she supports students and researchers in developing their projects through coaching and methodological training.
